We are still unpacking and organizing but we took ownership of our house yesterday. So now my much publicized "Of happenings" announcement can happen. I plan on turning my part of the garage into an F1 and Land Rover vomit workspace. And it's probably going to take me a couple years to get my lawn done up properly, and I need to put up a fence ASAP. Good thing I am quitting TV (with exception to Formula 1)O

is that real brick? That is a tidy little house you got yourself there. Congrats!

It continuously amazed me the houses you can get in the US compared to canada in terms of pricing...here in canada, that is a low 7 digit house in my area

I must know 505, are brick houses not that prominent in the US.
I have a vision in my mind of completely timber homes.

My wife and I watch all the HGTV shows that are made there and marvel at the lack of substance for the price, and also all those people who want to buy another house in the same neighborhood.
![]() 04/01/2015 at 12:07 |

wow, love it, the many rooflines and the brick exterior is fantastic. Far more style/charm than my own cookie cutter home.
note... I see see no garage :P
![]() 04/01/2015 at 12:08 |

they are not too prominent in some areas. Up in New England they are. My town burned to the ground twice so most of the newer places post fire are brick

It is on the side, the wife was just pulling out of it as we returned the 26' Penske rental

I will take them today when I go home.

Here in old England, probably 90% are brick and steel.
The Hotel I stayed at in Orlando featured a lot of render covered timber.

Congrats! How much of that backyard space do you have?

It's all about region. My 200k home in Michigan would cost 800k in North NJ where I grew up.

Fantastic looking house! Congrats!

In the north they seem to be rather uncommon, but alas I live in God's country, Tennessee, where land, fresh air, sales tax, and brick homes are a plenty.
![]() 04/01/2015 at 12:12 |

Really common where I grew up in NJ and out here in Michigan.
My house now is probably half brick exterior.

My company seems to have a lot of customers in Tennessee, Specifically around Nashville.

It depends on location. Anywhere primarily settled since about 1890 and subject to moderate climate (and sometimes worse) is timber-tastic unless it's in the city and thus near major concrete/etc. infrastructure. A lot of townhomes, apartments, and condos for that reason are concrete or brick. Even a lot of brick homes in rural areas are brick *and* timber. Even this location, which 80+ years ago even had its own brick facility, is mostly timber. A lot of it is not only unit cost but transport - not only is timber shockingly cheap, but it's very easy to move dozens of miles to the boonies. Brick and concrete, less so.

Housewarming Party!!
Congrats. Is this your first house?

to be entirely fair, i live RIGHT in the middle of suburbia. Its not too far to the center, not to far to get out to the country, perfect density, not to crowded or sparse, there are schools (elementary and high) with in walking distance and i'm 500 meter from young street.
all this ends up with a 1200sqft house being worth 700k

Bingo! I work south of NashVegas and live southeast now

I know. I'm seriously thinking about moving to the US because of this. cheap land.

You want to look at some prices for houses in the U.K. and then look at the size of the house you get for your money. That will really open your eyes.

Yes and the soundtrack fo rthe house party:

oh I know. Those prices are just flat out terrifying. (and downtown toronto isnt that far behind honestly)
![]() 04/01/2015 at 12:15 |

Very nice place and great size.
Let the other half sort the house out, your priority is sorting out the 'mancave'.
![]() 04/01/2015 at 12:15 |

Nice looking house. Even though there isn't really anything done to the yard, it has great curb appeal.
Re: Getting a fence. I just don't understand why anyone WOULDN'T have a fence. I like my privacy, and keeping my stuff mine. Plus, it's a million times easier when you have a dog. Unless, of course, your dog jumps your 6 foot high fence (like my part-kangaroo dog).

Here's the trick. My parents NAILED THIS TRICK.
Bought house in NJ before I was born (was foreclosed/bank owned) for only 75k. Sell this house 18 years later for 350k. Buy new house in NJ that needs some work for 400k. Do the work sell the house in 7 years for 800k.
Move to cheap as hell South Carolina and build your dream house for about 350k and have cash left over for a new Silverado to pull your new 24 foot speed boat.
Enjoy.

hehe. I get schools, the city thing...I'm happy with suburbia. I'd rather not have to wait 4 hours for someone to get to my house if something happens, and I like reasonably quick internet.
I was actually thinking of just buying a random piece of land wayyy north of toronto and building a awesome garage/storage shed for my automotive toys

My new ringtone.
The first thing I realized when we bought our house was that all the tools that seemed to come with my house when I was a kid didn't come with my new house: lawnmower, rakes, hoses, ladders, shovels, etc. I dropped major bank at Home Depot in the first couple of weeks.

We have only one right now (we adopted a second dog a little while ago but it attacked my wife and had to go back to the shelter after biting her several times) and although he has a huge personality he only weighs 12lbs, so basically in a real yard in the county he is pretty much useless. So I will be putting up a decent sized fence, probably 9 ft and hopefully getting a puppy this year.
![]() 04/01/2015 at 12:21 |

The yard is rough man, It most likely needs to be tilled and sodded but that will happen in due time
![]() 04/01/2015 at 12:22 |

have you considered solving your patchy grass problem by covering it with abandoned tractors?
old engine blocks and washing machines also acceptable
![]() 04/01/2015 at 12:23 |

Google Fiber is coming to my area in the next 5 years, approvals are all complete, and I cannot stand traffic or poorly designed roadway infrastructures. So we bought a house that is adjacent to the older highway system instead of in the new developments near the interstates and shopping centers.

I know right?! That is the next step, followed by major yard maintenance, followed by a fence, followed by a storage shed on the slab under my AC unit, followed by internal projects, and maybe finally adding a Focus RS to the garage space next to the Disco

It might look rough, but at least it's green. That's more than I can say for my yard.
When I bought my house it was vacant for probably 18 months or so, and I don't know if anyone did anything to the yard at all besides the occasional mow. I can't tell you how much time and effort I've put into my yard only to have it still look awful. Meanwhile my neighbors on both sides of me have lush lawns. Then again, they have sprinklers, and I refuse to pay what they do for water I'm sure.

Sorry. I didn't mean to be a dick....but that is a fact I learned yesterday. And I apparently am a dick. Again apologies and congrats on the house. I live in a ghetto low rise, so I think we know who's winning in real life, and it's probably not me.

All of God's children are winning at life. And that bankruptcy figure is likely because of my hometown, Memphis, where sadness and financial ruin go hand in hand much like drugs and violence. Hard work and the blessing of the ability to work hard are the biggest factors of successful lives. You're not a dick, this is Oppo, I welcome and appreciate all opinions, however contrary they may be.

Nice looking house. A little "weed and feed", and aeration would do wonders for the lawn.

Of course you realize that immediately I set out to make sure that wasn't a valuable tractor once. Answer: I don't think so - doesn't seem to be a Ford N-series which was my first thought.
![]() 04/01/2015 at 12:51 |

reasons I love oppo:
post an abandoned tractor, someone will attempt to identify it :D
![]() 04/01/2015 at 12:53 |
|
Although in fairness, my attempt was really half-assed. I only looked at like six types of tractor, tops. Although I did notice it appeared to have a three-cylinder, so is most likely a Ford 3000 or DAMNIT I HAVE A PROBLEM
![]() 04/01/2015 at 12:55 |
|
and in additional fairness, I did google about 6 different phrases before finding an appropriately abandoned piece of machinery for the photo-choppery
you'll be happy to know I was first trying to find a Rover of some sort

Whoooo thanks!
And yes, it mostly is because memphis, I believe the lecture I was listening to mentioned that.
Someday I too aspire to own a house.

My parents' house is brick underneath, but one of the previous owners decided they wanted to make it looks like a log cabin so it's covered in wood! It looks a lot better than it sounds haha
![]() 04/01/2015 at 14:06 |

Your yard is a lot better than my yard aka the mud pit.
![]() 04/01/2015 at 14:21 |

I'm in the complete opposite situation. Grew up in a place with pretty low home values (not near a city) but plenty of nice houses. Not fun finding out my idea of a $300k house is closer to an $800k house in the places I might get a job! R Saldana definitely got a sweet pad, but where I'm from low seven digits gets you close to 8000 sq. ft of luxury home on an all sports lake with 6 beds, 4 baths and a 3 car garage .
![]() 04/01/2015 at 14:23 |
|
Yes! My parents watch a ton of house hunters and the like. Always crazy when you see the young couple spending $600k for a studio in Manhattan, contrasted with the retirees spending $250k for a huge house on the ocean on some random island somewhere.

that smart real estate buyer lyfe!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
![]() 04/01/2015 at 14:27 |

I went to a country with substantially lower prices than the likes of the US, France, Germany, etc. for the first time a few weeks ago and I was completely amazed. I now totally understand why people want to retire to places like Belize and Thailand (besides the beaches and stuff). Amazing paying less than $40 for a meal that might have cost me $90 in the US.
![]() 04/01/2015 at 14:53 |

I did the same thing: moved to someplace (the DC area) with much higher real estate prices for work.
Like, it makes me want to cry looking at house prices up here.
